Alison Grohe never forgot her fifth-grade art project. It was a fabric doll covered in sequins and feathers inspired by Philadelphia Mummers’ glittering costumes.  The project was the introduction to the Philly-area tradition for Grohe and hundreds of elementary schoolers growing up in Merchantville in the 1990s.

More than a decade after she made her first doll, the Burlington County Special Services teacher is using the same art project she grew up with to introduce a new generation of students to the fanfare of the local folk tradition.
